K. Webster – Indie Author Extraordinaire

I stumbled upon K. Webster on Tiktok of all places, I actually think I heard of her before then, but never really looked into her much because it was a blip here and a blip there on Facebook.  But seeing her personality shine through on Tiktok she hooked me.

She has a no nonsense, no apologies necessary personality that I love.  She loves what she does and she doesn’t let fear of being judged get in the way.  I fell in love.  And then I went and started downloading her books , the ones that haven’t been banned on Amazon.  I do plan on buying the banned ones, soon, very soon, but I want them all autographed and personalized to me.  Because I am just like that.  I have always loved pushing boundaries and love pushing the lines. I did that with my writing, but I let my fears get in the way, and stopped writing. K. Webster has given or let me borrow some of the inspiration and courage I need to start writing whatever I want and not worry about what people say or how they judge.

Also, go follow her on Tiktok she gives some great advice over there.

So keep reading for my interview with K. Webster.

The Interview

  1. When did you start writing?

  1. How did you choose what to write?

I’ve always loved mysteries and thrillers, but I’m a sucker for a love story and a HEA. It was only natural my first book was a romantic suspense.

  1. What do you like about writing what you do, even though it can be very taboo?

I love writing whatever I want, even if it’s something not often talked about or considered controversial because I like making people think. I love the challenge of making them put aside their beliefs and values if only for the story and/or characters. It’s fun to give people new paths to venture on while reading that they’re not comfortable or familiar with.

  1. What are your plans for the future with your writing career?

I’d love to continue to write tons of books. One day I’d love to write some YA or teen books. I’m happy with self-publishing and all the control it gives me, but I’m always open to trying new things to reach broader audiences. At the end of the day, as long as I’m writing and publishing and making a living at it, I’m beyond thrilled.

  1. What do you feel makes your audience/readers special?

My readers/audience are the most adventurous and trusting bunch out there. They know I’m going to test them and they’re open to being tested. I do my part by giving them a thought-provoking, steamy, emotional, and romantic story with an HEA and they do their part by diving in to read it no matter how wild or crazy it sounds. I love how brave my readers are!

  1. Has anything surprised you about starting a website?

I’m surprised at all the traffic that flows to my website. At first, I’d have assumed Amazon would have been my main avenue to attract readers, but my website is such a valuable tool. Even if an author doesn’t sell books on their website, they should have it updated, informational, and easy to navigate for the readers who are hoping to learn more about them. I think of it as a main hub that’ll get them anywhere they need to go.

  1. Did you do your site yourself?

I had my site built by IndieSage PR. They maintain it and I jump in there to tweak/change things whenever necessary.

  1. Do you use WordPress?

Yes.

  1. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting to write?

Just write the book. Focus on that first. It’s the most important part. All the other stuff can be learned by research and observation and joining groups, but focus on your product first and the rest will fall into line.

  1. If you could go back in time and do something differently, what would you do and why?

I would start writing bravely sooner. I would have stayed a little more organized with my books as far as where I published them and whatnot. I would go back to my former self and told them not to focus on the advice of others too much and just follow my gut instinct as that’s what has opened more doors and led the way than anything else.

  1. How fast did your audience grow? How many visitors/subscribers do you have?

It took a long time. I started my social media for my author a little before I released my first book. I’d gained a lot of new followers through takeover parties on Facebook and interacting in reader groups. My newsletter has slowly grown to around 25k subscribers which I’m proud of. All my social media sites are doing great too. It takes nurturing and interaction. It didn’t just happen. Day by day I worked at it and never got discouraged. I believe I have around 37k or something that follow me on Facebook now, but Instagram is quickly catching up. My goal is to have TikTok beat them all…ha!

  1. Is this your only job?

Yes! Full-time writer here.

  1. Did you launch your writing career while working another job?

I’d been working as a graphic designer for a clothing boutique while also writing, but I ended up quitting that side hustle to focus all my energy on writing and publishing.

  1. Do you have an email list? If so, did you start it when you launched?

I started my newsletter list not long after my first release. Until this summer, I’d just barely maintained it. But, after taking some newsletter courses and reading up on it, I’ve been dedicating more effort to it and seeing the results from it. Newsletters are a great way to reach your readers.

  1. How do you promote your books?

Social media, newsletters, and blog tours. I used to do ads but then I just quit them because I didn’t see any results.

  1. I know you sell your books on your website but do you earn money from your website in other ways, and if so, how? Affiliate marketing, ads, products, etc.? Did you intend to earn from it when you launched?

As of yet, I haven’t done any affiliate marketing, mainly because I didn’t know much about it. I’ve been researching it though and hope to dig into it soon. I have ceased all ads.

  1. Who are your authors right now?

My favorite authors to read right now are C.S Pascat, Kora Knight, and Nora Sakovik.

  1. Big Question Now… What was the first book to be banned on Amazon and how soon in your career did that happen?  And did it worry you when it happened?

Technically, Preach was my first banned book. No one really knew about that book, so it didn’t cause a stink. However, a couple months later, The Wild was banned. It caused an enormous uproar because of the controversial subject matter. I’d unknowingly stepped into a firestorm on social media that I didn’t intend to start. Until then, all my books (and me) had flown under the radar, so it was kind of a shock to have so many people discussing it. I’d been publishing for about 3 years when that happened. And, yes, I was incredibly worried. It was a stressful time for me, but it made me grow as a person and an author.
